Race Director’s Corner

RaceDirector

Kim Tompkins was first introduced to Dragon Boating in 1999 when she helped put together an all women’s team called Canadian Construction Women’s Dragon Boat Team. The intent was to raise the profile of women in construction as well as promote team work and camaraderie amongst the CCW organization. The team participated in numerous regattas including Alcan, Victoria, Richmond, and Kelowna.

Kim left CCW in 2002 to join a mixed competitive team called Roli where she paddled in Kelowna and San Francisco before having her paddling career cut short due to a serious car accident.

Still having such a love for the sport she volunteered at the Alcan Dragon Boat Festival as a water official and worked Kelowna and Alcan for 2 years before moving to Starter permanently. Kim has worked the following Water’s Edge events and has been an integral part of the success of the Water’s Edge Event Management Team for the past 7 years: Kelowna Dragon Boat Festival, Alcan Regatta and Alcan Dragon Boat Festival, Arizona Dragon Boat Festival, Water’s Edge Dash (White Rock and Deep Cove), Calgary Dragon Boat Festival, Canadian National Dragon Boat Festival – Calgary, Vernon Dragon Boat Festival, Harrison Dragon Boat Festival, Whistler Dragon Boat Festival, Canadian National Dragon Boat Time Trials – Toronto, and the Canadian Nation Dragon Boat Festival – Toronto and recently worked at the Canadian Nationals in Victoria BC.

She joined G2G Events Management Team in 2011 and has continued to work her regular events along the west coast.

Kim has gone on to achieve her International Level One officials Status and worked the World Dragon Boat Championships in Szeged, Hungary in the summer of 2013 in Crew Marshalling where she had the opportunity to work face to face with the teams rather from a distance (start line). She looks forward to the World Club Crew Championships in Ravenna Italy at the end of August.

Kim brings to the G2G Event Management Team a strong sense of fairness; experience as a paddler on the line and an ability to maintain a calm, level head in most every situation.
